By applying a qualitative content analysis to the textbook written before 1925, this study investigates the proposition in the contemporary management textbooks that the classical management adopted a closed system approach. In this context, five contemporary Turkish textbooks, eight contemporary English textbooks and thirteen textbooks written before 1925 were examined. The first finding is that in all contemporary Turkish textbooks examined, classical management and closed system are ascribed while in contemporary English textbooks such ascription is avoided. The second finding is that authors of the Turkish textbooks make generalizations about the views of Taylor, Fayol and Weber without sufficiently scrutinizing their works. Again, it is determined that the expression that classical management viewed workers as a machine, is not true. The third finding of the study displays that detailed information about the external environment of the organization is provided in the pre-1925 textbooks reviewed. Finally, it is determined that due to lack of critical perspectives many contradictory expressions took place in today's textbooks. Depending on these findings it is suggested that in the textbooks and related literature fundamental changes must be made with regards to the discourse of the Classical Management.
