Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is one of the most common disorders encountered by departments of neurosurgery worldwide. This entity is especially common in the elderly. Despite all efforts, the rates of postoperative recurrence and reoperation are still high. This in turn increases the morbidity and mortality rates in the elderly population with comorbid disorders. The most commonly used surgical methods that have now become traditional can be classified as double burr-hole drainage, single and wide burr-hole drainage, and craniotomy. Among the newer methods, mini-craniotomy and basal membranotomy, the endoscopic technique, and middle meningeal artery embolization are now on the agenda. The most appropriate surgical strategy for each patient should be determined by taking all the factors into account. The physician's preference will be the most important factor in determining the surgical method chosen. Making a joint decision may be the most appropriate method in the selection of surgical or conservative treatment as well as in cases where selecting the surgical method is difficult. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.
