Ozone gas, which is mostly found in the stratosphere and troposphere layers of the atmosphere and contains three oxygen atoms, has been applicable in many areas of industry from disinfection and food storage to removal of heavy studied metal and air conditioning systems due to its excessive reactivity properties. As a type of “active super oxygen” in the field of health sciences, ozone has also been researching the mechanism of the combination reactions occurring in the human body due to its highly reactive structure and strengthening the immune system, for decades. The ozone gas is also helpful for supporting the self-repair mechanism of the body. As a result, the therapeutic effects of ozone in pre- or post-treatment periods have been investigated by scientists in recent years to eliminate incurable diseases, especially inflammatory disorders caused by insufficient oxygenation. This chapter aims to define details of the structural properties of ozone gas, having therapeutic properties in the field of medicine, as well as the handling by appropriate equipment such as the ozone generator. Moreover, studies related to the therapeutic application of the ozone gas in medicine and dentistry were compiled. This chapter also provides information on the future aspects of the ozone gas with respect to more complex medical treatment methods and for improving the functional properties of several medicinal natural compounds. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
