Öğe Can YouTube be used as a source of information for swallowing disorders in individuals with dementia?(2023) Parlak, Mümüne Merve; Yıldırım, CansuObjectives: This study aimed to examine YouTube video content as a general source of information about dysphagia in individuals with dementia. Materials and Methods: In this study, videos about dysphagia in individuals with dementia uploaded to the YouTube platform on June 4, 2023, were analyzed using the keywords “swallowing in dementia,” “swallowing disorders in dementia,” and “dysphagia in dementia.” Modified DISCERN was used to assess the reliability of the videos, the Global Quality Scale to assess their quality, the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark criteria to assess their transparency, and the Video Power Index to calculate their popularity. Twenty-four videos uploaded between October 21, 2009, and October 31, 2022 were included in the final content analysis. Results: Speech and language therapists/pathologists (SLPs) uploaded 54.17% of the videos, 37.50% were uploaded by non-SLP health workers, and 8.33% were uploaded by other individuals. Global Quality Scale scores were positively correlated with JAMA and video duration and negatively correlated with the number of days elapsed. There was a statistically significant difference in the duration, number of views, number of likes, comments, and JAMA mean scores among video sources (SLP vs. non-SLP health workers; p<0.05). Conclusion: The number of videos about swallowing and swallowing disorders in individuals with dementia on YouTube is low; popularity does not reflect high quality, reliability, or competence. Therefore, health professionals working in this field, such as speech-language pathologists, neurologists, and otolaryngologists, should increase the number of informative and guiding videos and ensure that videos that are considered accurate are communicated to the patient and caregiver/relative.Öğe CLINICAL AND INSTRUMENTAL ASSESSMENT OF DYSPHAGIA IN SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY STUDENTS: AWARENESS AND KNOWLEDGE LEVELS(2023) Parlak, Mümüne Merve; Yıldırım, Cansu; Sapmaz, MervePurpose: The aim of this study was to question the awareness and knowledge levels of undergraduate students in the department of speech and language therapy regarding clinical and instrumental swallowing assessment and compare the findings between the 3rd and 4th grades and between those with and without internships. Methods: The researchers created a questionnaire with five sections and a total of 120 questions. The link to the questionnaire transferred to a Google Form was sent to students via social media platforms. Results: A total of 327 (289 female and 38 male) SLP students from 12 different schools participated in the survey. It was found that 4th graders were statistically significantly higher than 3rd graders, and internship students were statistically significantly higher than non- internship students in terms of thinking that they could perform clinical swallowing tests on their own and being confident in interpreting test results, as well as awareness and knowledge levels of clinical and instrumental swallowing evaluation (p<0.05).Almost half of all participants stated that their clinical courses on instrumental swallowing were insufficient. Conclusion: In this study, it was observed that the level of education and internship status affected the level of self-confidence, knowledge, and awareness of individuals about swallowing disorders. It was determined that especially instrumental swallowing assessment courses were inadequate. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the content of the swallowing disorders course, especially instrumental swallowing evaluation, and to demonstrate what is taught in the course in practice in the internship. Thus, the awareness, knowledge, and self-confidence of SLPs about swallowing can be increased.Öğe Serebral Palside Dil ve Konuşma Bozukluklarına Yönelik Farkındalık Çalışması(Ankara Üniversitesi, 2023) Parlak, Mümüne Merve; Yıldırım, Cansu; Atalar, Merve SapmazAmaç: Çalışmanın amacı serebral palsi (SP) ve SP’li bireylerin dil ve konuşma bozukluklarına yönelik toplumsal farkındalığın incelenmesidir. Bu alanda toplumun farkındalığını ve bilgi düzeyini artırmak amacıyla eğitimler, seminerler düzenlenebilir; televizyon ve sosyal medya kullanılarak toplumsal farkındalık çalışmaları yürütülebilir.Öğe The Opinions and Working Experiences of Doctors from Different Branches of Medicine Working in Turkey Concerning Speech and Language Pathologists(2024) Parlak, Mümüne Merve; Karacaoğlu, Emrah; Karabulut, Buse Nur; Öztürk, Seren DüzenliObjective: This study aimed to examine the thoughts, knowledge, collaborative processes, and experiences of doctors in different branches of medicine, as these comprise the occupational groups in which speech-language pathologists/therapists (SLPs) work in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary capacities. Material and Method: A Google survey was created focusing on the opinions about and working experiences of doctors in different branches of medicine working in Turkey with SLPs. The questionnaire consisted of 18 questions and four parts. Results: The study was conducted with 116 doctors, 28.4% of whom were neurologists, 28.4% were otorhinolaryngologists, 21.6% were pediatricians, and 21.6% were other specialists. Only 25.9% (n=30) have worked with an SLP before. Speech sound disorders, fluent speech disorders, and developmental language disorders were the most frequently chosen SLP study areas among all the specialties in which doctors in all branches of medicine work. The lowest number of doctors chose swallowing disorders, followed by cognitive communication disorders and X-linked language disorders, as the field of work of SLPs. Conclusion: It was found that the number of SLPs working in doctors' institutions, the level of cooperation between doctors and SLPs, and doctors' knowledge about the working areas of SLPs were low. It has been observed that physicians' awareness, especially in swallowing and cognitive communication disorders, is lacking. A strong partnership between physicians and SLPs is vital for appropriate service delivery to patients. For this reason, the number of SLPs working in institutions should be increased, as should the level of knowledge among doctors in different branches of medicine concerning SLPs’ services.
