Employing cluster analysis and decision trees, the research aims to categorize countries based on their representation, participation and success.Design/methodology/approachThis research employs a data-driven approach to comprehensively analyze and enhance understanding of countries' performances in individual Olympic Games. The methodology involves a two-stage clustering method and decision tree analysis to categorize countries and identify influential factors shaping their Olympic profiles.FindingsThe study, analyzing countries' performances in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics through cluster analysis and decision trees, identified five clusters with consistent profiles. Notably, China, Great Britain, Japan, Russian Olympic Committee and the United States formed a high-performing group, showcasing superior success, representation and participation. The analysis revealed a correlation between higher representation/participation and success in individual Olympic Games. Decision tree insights underscored the significance of population size, GDP per Capita and HALE index, indicating that countries with larger populations, better economic standing and higher health indices tended to perform better.Research limitations/implicationsThe study has several limitations that should be considered. Firstly, the findings are based on data exclusively from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which may limit the generalizability of the results to other editions.Practical implicationsThe research offers practical implications for policymakers, governments and sports organizations seeking to enhance their country's performance in individual Olympic Games.Social implicationsThe research holds significant social implications by contributing insights that extend beyond the realm of sports.Originality/valueThe originality and value of this research lie in its holistic approach to analyzing countries' performances in individual Olympic Games, particularly using a two-stage clustering method and decision tree analysis.Öğe Classification of Provinces in Turkey in Terms of Health Indicators with Fuzzy Clustering Analysis(Springer International Publishing Ag, 2022) Dolu, Asli; Kuvvetli, UmitHealth services are critical indicators in determining countries' sustainable development and socio-economic development levels. Especially in the process of the Covid-19 pandemic, it has been understood how important countries' health systems are for their economic status. While the countries compare their health indicators, they also try to implement health policies to reduce the development differences. Therefore, determining and classifying the existing social and economic structures of provinces is very important in examining the development status and possible development trends of provinces and informing regional health policies in parallel. This study it is aimed to classify 81 provinces in Turkey with their health indicators using fuzzy clustering analysis. As a result of the study, homogeneous provincial groups with the same characteristics in terms of health indicators will be determined. In light of the results, policy suggestions will be made to eliminate the development differences between clusters in the proposed regional health policies.Öğe Evaluation of the Efficiency of Urban Public Transport Routes with Data Envelopment Analysis(Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi, 2025) Kuvvetli, Umit; Ekinci, RamazanUrban public transport, which is one of the important elements of urban life, is one of the main indicators that determine the level of development of cities. Especially in metropolitan cities, it becomes a necessity to make the best use of resources and increase the quality of service in the urban public transport sector, which is the common point in solving many problems such as traffic density, air pollution, noise, excessive energy consumption, etc. However, it is very important that bus routes, which constitute the backbone of urban public transport systems in almost all cities, are used effectively. In this study, efficiency analysis was carried out using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) on 323 bus routes serving in the city of Izmir with data for weekdays in the October-December 2019 period. The results show that the efficiency of bus routes decreases as the route length increases and the efficiency of the routes serving in the city center is higher. The results of the study will help businesses in terms of improving services, gaining new passengers, and making better use of resources.Öğe Factors Affecting Protection Motivations and the Role of Message Appeal: A Research in the Context of COVID-19(Marmara Univ, Fac Communication, 2023) Asunakutlu, Tuncer; Aydin, Ali Emre; Karanfil, Derya; Kuvvetli, Umit; Aydogan, Tahsin; Ozturk, Seren Duzenli; Yilmaz, TugbaThis study examines the effects of the communication contents designed in the context of COVID-19 on individuals' protection motivations and behaviors. It aims to understand the mechanism for increasing the protection motivation of individuals and to develop communication processes that will activate this mechanism, based on the importance of individual measures in avoiding the negative consequences of COVID-19. The research carried out for this purpose consists of two separate studies. The first study examined motivational factors affecting individuals' intention to protect through an online questionnaire. The second study carried out laboratory experiments by making use of the between-groups experimental design, and the effect of messages containing fear and rational appeals on the motivation of protection was measured. The findings reveal that perceived severity, self-efficacy, and external response efficacy are positively related to the intention to protect. Additionally, fear appeal has a stronger effect on perceived severity than rational appeal. In the light of findings, suggestions have been developed to make the communication processes related to combating public health problems more effective. In this respect, the results of the study can guide strategies to increase the protection motivation of individuals. In this context, the results are considered important for the health of both individuals and society.Öğe Home Advantage and Away Disadvantage of Teams in Champions League: Is It Valid for All Teams and Against Every Opponent?(Termedia Publishing House Ltd, 2024) Kuvvetli, Umit; Cilengiroglu, Ozguel VupaThe home advantage (HA) is a robust phenomenon in soccer whereby the home team wins more games and scores more goals than the away team. Similarly, away disadvantage (AD) means that an away team loses more games or scores less goals than the home team. This study examines the HA and AD values of teams in the UEFA -Champions League, covering the seasons from 2003/2004 to 2021/2022, a total of 2,344 matches. Controlling for team ability differences, the study revealed significant variations in HA, ranging from 32.1% to 79.5%, while AD values ranged from 45.1% to 71.9%. The study further found that HA remained consistent for teams across both the group and knockout stages, while AD varied between these stages. Furthermore, the results suggest that, for certain teams, HA is predominantly manifested against weaker opponents, and the impact of opponent strength on HA and AD is limited.Öğe Media representations of naturalized athletes: Sentiment variations and trends in Turkish media(Sage Publications Ltd, 2023) Inci, Elcin Istif; Tinaz, Cem; Kuvvetli, Umit; Turgut, Nefise MeltemTurkey has received consistent criticism from international media for having many naturalized athletes in its national squad, both in the Olympic Games and other major international sporting events. Similar criticisms have also been a feature of debates for a long time in domestic media, varying in views toward these athletes. This research focuses on media representations of naturalized athletes in Turkey between 2008 and 2020. We investigated the sentiments of news items from four major Turkish newspapers (Milliyet, Cumhuriyet, Sabah and Fanatik) on their stances toward naturalized athletes over the timespan of 2008-2020. Beside analyzing the sentiment of the media content both cumulatively and fragmentedly, we also identified the yearly trends and most featured sports in this context, combining qualitative and quantitative techniques. Our findings showed that sentiments in Turkish media toward naturalized athletes are mostly neutral and negative as well as with differences varying on the basis of the newspapers and news item types. The most criticism underlined pursuing shortcut success with naturalized athletes representing Turkey in the international arena. Among the featured sports, basketball, football, and track and field have been the most discussed ones in the naturalization context.Öğe Success Factors in the European Football Championship(Fenerbahçe Üniversitesi, 2023) Kuvvetli, UmitIn this study, the aim was to determine the critical factors for success in UEFA European Men's Football Championships. Accordingly, data on various variables related to national teams participating in six European Football Championships held between 2000 and 2020 were collected and analyzed using logistic regression. The analysis results indicate that the number of players from Champions League teams and the position of countries in the FIFA rankings are influential in reaching the quarterfinals, while the number of players from teams of the Champions League and reaching the last 16 in UEFA Cup has an impact on reaching the semi-finals. In addition to these variables, the number of players from the top five major football leagues and the position of countries in the FIFA rankings positively affect the likelihood of countries being more successful, whereas the number of players from different club teams in the tournament squad and having a foreign national team coach negatively affect the probability of countries being successful. The results yöshow that a high quality population is more necessary for success than a large population of the country.
